Join us for a special presentation on the Atchafalaya Basin. This amazing wilderness lies only a stone's throw from Lafayette and offers all of us as outdoors people an incredible opportunity for adventure. The Night will feature live music from Drew Landry, a presentation of the recent Cross Basin Canoe trip, a talk by activist Harold Schoeffler and a presentation by Dean and Cara Wilson - Atchafalaya Basinkeepers.
Cross Basin Paddle Trip Presentation
The evening will begin with a short presentation of the cross-basin paddle trip recently completed by a small group from Lafayette. This trip was the brain child of Stacey Scarce, designed to draw attention to some of the environmental problems in the basin. The idea was to connect the homes of two of the best known environmental forces in the basin: Greg Guirard and Dean Wilson. We'll show the route that was taken to travel from Greg's home in Catahoula to Dean's home in Bayou Sorrel as well as photos of the trip.
Dean Wilson - BasinKeeper
Dean Wilson, leader of the BasinKeeper initiative will speak on the beauty and importance of the Atchafalaya Basin. He will outline what the BasinKeeper program is doing and how you can get involved. This program will launch the BasinKeeper's biggest, most aggressive campaign ever to save our beloved Basin.
At this special program, Dean will show slides of the basin that will show you some of its incredible beauties - as well as some of the threats to this incredible eco-system. You will learn about the BasinKeeper's campaign and what you can do to make sure that our kids and grandkids inherit the Atchafalaya.
Atchafalaya Activist Harold Schoeffler
Harold Schoeffler will speak on some of the problems that exist within the Basin as well as talking about an idea to create a new National Park in the Atchafalaya.
Support Atchafalaya Basinkeepers
Artist Jon McManus has donated his art work to raise funds for the Atchafalaya Basinkeeper. During the evening, you will have the opportunity to purchase a special greeting card created by Jon that depicts a beautiful basin scene. These cards will be sold for $5 each. All proceeds go directly to the Atchafalaya Basinkeeper program. In addition, we'll hold a silent auction for the original framed art work by Jon McManus. This one of a kind piece of art will be something you will treasure for years to come. All proceeds from the silent auction will be donated to the Atchafalaya Basinkeeper Program.
